Malpositioned Maxillaries and Teeth
Malocclusion is a technical term means the way your teeth bite together is not ideal.
A poor fitting bite may cause or aggravate:
- esthetic problems;
- unbalanced biting forces between your front and back teeth, causing excessive pressure leading to fractures, wear and other issues;
- your jaw muscles and joints may have functional problems causing pain and trouble chewing;
- your teeth are more likely to further shifting over time;
- more accumulation of bacteria in your mouth which will be more difficult to clean correctly.
Malocclusion can be also caused by skeletal disharmonies. This means that the problem is also on your jaw bones. Your upper and lower jaw bones mays have grown in a disproportionate way or they may be in a position that is not ideal relative to each other.
The treatment of malocclusions consists in the use of an orthodontic device (braces) to move your teeth into the correct position or it may be necessary surgery to correct the jaw bones proportions.
3D Diagnose for Orthodontic Study
– SYM3D Protocol
– Tridimensional Craniofacial Analysis
– Thorough study and more detail in diagnose and treatment plan
– Used for orthodontic study in more complex cases and in multidisciplinary cases which involve other simultaneous treatments such as implants, crowns or veneers.
Correction of Anterior Crossbite Malocclusion
– Anterior Crossbite Malocclusion (upper front teeth bite inside the lower front teeth) and Classe III Tendency (tendency to lower jaw bone overgrowth in relation to the upper jaw bone).
– Interceptive orthodontic treatment – performed in children to prevent more difficult problems to solve in adult age
– Fixed Device for Palatal Expansion – McNamara Palatal Expander (increase dimension of upper jaw bone)
– Facial Mask (forward displacement of the upper jaw bone)
– Clinical Work – Margarida Nunes
Correction of Overjet and Overbite Excess Malocclusion
– Overjet and Overbite Excess Malocclusion (increased distance between the upper incisors and lower incisors, high tendency to fracture the front upper and lower teeth and possible blockage of lower bone jaw growth)
– Interceptive orthodontic treatment – in children to prevent more difficult problems in adult age
– Modified Teuscher device (allows upper jaw expansion, blockage of upper jaw bone growth and unlocking of lower jaw to promote the correct bone growth)
– Lip bumper – to prevent the interposition of inferior lip between upper and lower jaw
– Clinical Work – Margarida Nunes
Correction of Crowded Teeth
– Crowded teeth
– Extraction of 4 premolars to gain space
– Treatment with fixed braces
– Clinical Work – Margarida Nunes
Correction of Crowded Teeth
– Case with a missing inferior incisor
– Correction with fixed braces
– With braces, teeth are moved into its correct position.
– Replacement of worn tooth structure with resin composites.
– The space of the missing incisor is restored with composites.
– Clinical Work: Margarida Nunes
Multidisciplinary cases 3D Planning
3DVD® (Three-dimensional Virtual Diagnosis)
– Indications:
- Orthodontic treatments
- Ortho-surgical treatments (ortodonthics e orthognathic surgery)
- Treatments for oral rehabilitation (need of orthodontics for future rehabilitation with implants and crowns)
– Advantages:
- Allows visualization of the exact teeth movements
- Allows calculating the position of the implants, that are possible to place, before the orthodontic treatment. These implants will provide anchorage (support) to move the other teeth, shortening the orthodontic treatment time, reducing the duration of the entire treatment.
Clear Aligners
– Invisalign® System
– Allow orthodontic treatment without using brackets (braces).
– Clear aligners are small transparent devices, almost invisibles, to straighten teeth. These aligners are removed only to eat.
Orthodontic Skeletal Anchorage with Mini Plates
– Mini Plates are small devices placed in the jaw bones to allow anchorage during teeth movement.
– Mini plates provide more anchorage, which means that the range of teeth movements is wider.
– The use of mini plates enables more satisfactory results in less time taht it usually takes.
